How Stump Grinding Works
The process is straightforward:

We Set Up the Grinder
Our stump grinder uses a rotating carbide-tipped wheel that chips away at the wood. We position it, clear the immediate area, and get to work.
We Grind Below Grade
We take the stump down 6 to 8 inches below the surrounding soil level. This is deep enough to cover with topsoil and plant grass — the stump will never be visible or cause problems again.
We Clean Up the Grindings
Grinding produces a pile of wood chips and sawdust mixed with soil. We can either backfill the hole with these grindings (they decompose and settle over time) or haul them away and backfill with clean topsoil — your choice.
Your Yard Is Ready
Once backfilled and leveled, the area is ready for grass seed, sod, mulch, or whatever you’d like to do with the space.
The whole process usually takes 30 minutes to 2 hours per stump, depending on the size. A typical 18-inch pine stump is done in about 45 minutes.

What Happens After the Stump Is Ground?
This is where a lot of companies just pack up and leave. We think the “after” matters as much as the grinding itself.
🪵 The Grindings
You’ll have a pile of wood chips and soil roughly two to three times the volume of the original stump (the grinding process fluffs the material up). You can use this as mulch in garden beds, compost it, or we can haul it away.
🌱 Backfilling
We’ll fill the hole with either the grindings or clean topsoil. If you’re planning to plant grass, topsoil is the better option — fresh wood chips can temporarily tie up nitrogen in the soil and make it harder for new grass to establish.
📐 Settling
Expect the filled area to settle 2 to 4 inches over the next few months as the remaining root material underground decomposes. You may need to add a bit more soil and reseed. This is normal and not a sign that anything went wrong.
🌿 The Roots
Underground roots are left in place after grinding. In East Texas red clay, most roots decompose within 3 to 7 years depending on the species. They won’t cause any issues for your lawn — they simply break down naturally.

Want to plant a new tree in the same spot? Wait at least one to two seasons and make sure the old root material has started decomposing. Planting directly into fresh grindings doesn’t give a new tree the soil conditions it needs.
